Lodging at Mashpi Amagusa

Staying the night at Mashpi Amagusa is magical.

The Mashpi Amagusa Lodge was built on old farm land that is being restored to native habitat.

Built in 2023, our carefully designed lodge includes four well-appointed rooms with private bathrooms (see below) and an expansive, covered balcony with a comfortable seating and views of the surrounding foothills. The strong roof protects the building from sudden downpours that are common in the rainforest.

In the early mornings, we take advantage of our balcony to observe birds that visit our Light Trap. But our overnight guests can hang out here at any time of day. Many birds come into the adjacent garden, including colorful Rose-faced Parrots that visit to eat bananas.

The Outdoor “Rooms” of our Lodge

Our lodge dining room is only a few steps away, on the other side of the garden. It provides another wonderful area to hang out when not hiking or birdwatching. In fact, the feeder closest to the dining room is often visited by some of our favorite tanagers, including the Moss-backed and Glistening Green. Hummingbirds often flit through the dining room’s living wall of native flowers, sipping nectar from delicate, pale orange flowers.

A path from the dining room leads up a short hill to two other “rooms” in our lodge. The first is our famous hummingbird garden. The second is our tanager viewing area, though many other birds are attracted to this area that abuts the native forest. Both of these viewing stations have roofs to protect our visitors from wet weather while allowing the birds free rein. In fact, some of our most frequent visitors find that hummingbirds perch on their cameras and cellphones, unafraid to commune with our guests.
